Empathy is n๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น, i๐˜๐˜€ e๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ t๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด t๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐˜€.

Recently ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ ๐˜‰๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด ๐˜™๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ published a powerful article: “Empathy is a Core Leadership Skill.

Empathy is not a nice-to-have, nor a soft skill. Empathy is a business-critical capability.

When leaders dismiss empathy as โ€œtouchy-feely,โ€ the cost is real:

โ€ขย Low morale
โ€ขย Poor retention
โ€ขย Withholding of ideas
โ€ขย Burnout

In my work with leaders and middle managers through the ๐—•๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ต ๐—•๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—”๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜†, I see this pattern often. Well-intentioned leaders think theyโ€™re being empatheticโ€”but their teams donโ€™t feel it. That gap leads to disengagement and, eventually, exhaustion.

One quote in particular from the article resonated with me:
โ€œEmpathy in action is practiced through the questions we ask, the listening we do, and the quality of attention we give.โ€

Hereโ€™s what real empathy looks like:

โœ”๏ธ Listening without judgment
โœ”๏ธ Asking open-ended questions
โœ”๏ธ Creating space without over-identifying
โœ”๏ธ Setting boundaries while still supporting others
โœ”๏ธ Updating your language to connectโ€”not dismiss

If we want to ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฉ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ป๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ต, it has to start with emotionally intelligent leaders who know how to hold space, not just hold people accountable.

Ask yourself the following: How does your organization define and practice empathy? Is it built into your culture, or does it feel like an afterthought?
