Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny headlined the Super Bowl Halftime Show in the San Francisco area.
He became the first Latino solo artist to headline the halftime show and the first to perform almost entirely in Spanish on this massive global stage.
For those who missed it, you can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6FuWd4wNd8.
There are volumes of ideas I could post about, but I will keep it to just a few key points.
First of all, his entire performance was a story. There were so many elements wrapped up in his story.
You saw a sugar cane field, a Puerto Rican casita, a wedding, and dancers exuding joy. There was his younger self, being shown that he could reach his dreams, exhibited by handing his Grammy award to a young boy.
There was a parade of flags from all the countries of “The Americas,” while he named each and every country. And then he held up a football marked with Together, we are America. And he ended by saying God Bless America.
The Bridge to Inclusion
For me it wasn’t just about the Latin music, which I happen to love. It was also about how much of the US’s culture is influenced by Latin culture – the music, the dances, and last but not least, the importance of inclusion in our culture. Remembering that we are more alike than different. Ricky Martin is certainly a symbol of that bridge to inclusion. And Lady Gaga represented acceptance by jumping over the bridge with her salsa rhythm and wearing red, white, and blue.
Inclusion
Inclusion is not about checking a box. Rather, it is about ensuring that everyone is seen, heard and accepted, no matter their differences.
Inclusion is a critical part of retention. And, by the way, inclusion is also a burnout retention strategy.
In my work with leaders, I see that when employees feel represented and acknowledged by leadership, a powerful culture emerges: the energy of engagement.
The energy of engagement fuels performance and drives results.
What is one thing your organization does to pique the energy of engagement?
