As we head into Mental Health Month, it’s time to start thinking about how to prioritize employee mental health.

A recent ๐—™๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐˜€ article by Julian Hayes II (โ€œ๐˜Œ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜บ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ ๐˜‰๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ต: ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜”๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด,โ€ 3/17/25) sheds light on a pressing issue: ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜†๐—ฒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—น๐˜† ๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ป๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜†.

As a matter of fact, according to a study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Add to that the steep costs of attritionโ€”including recruiting, onboarding, and lost institutional knowledgeโ€”and the price of doing nothing becomes staggering.

A 2024 survey involving over 12,000 participants revealed that 82% of the workforce is at risk of burnout. ๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด

Burnout isn’t just about physical exhaustion; it’s a multifaceted problem.

Burnout also affects:ย

โ€ข emotional well-being
โ€ข productivity
โ€ข organizational culture

When employees are overwhelmed, their engagement drops, creativity wanes, and turnover rates spikeโ€”all of which have tangible impacts on the bottom line.

In my work with leaders and teams, I’ve observed that burnout often stems from a lack of emotional intelligence in leadership and a culture that doesn’t prioritize well-being. It’s not enough to offer wellness programs or occasional mental health days; organizations need a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of burnout.

This is where cultivating emotionally intelligent managers become crucial.

Leaders who can:

๐Ÿ’ฅ recognize signs of stress
๐Ÿ’ฅ communicate effectively
๐Ÿ’ฅ foster a supportive environment

can make a significant difference. It’s about creating a culture where employees feel valued, heard, and empowered to take care of their mental health.

Implementing structured programs that focus on burnout prevention from the inside out can equip teams with the tools they need to manage stress proactively. By addressing burnout at its core, organizations not only enhance employee well-being but also drive productivity and reduce attrition.

The data is clear: ignoring burnout is no longer an option. It’s time for organizations to take a proactive stance, investing in strategies that promote a healthy, engaged, and resilient workforce.

By investing in burnout prevention strategies, like the ๐—•๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ต ๐—•๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ programs, organizations can save significant dollars while strengthening team resilience.

Prevention isn’t just good for peopleโ€”it’s smart business.
